    Definition of Stochastics

    Stochastics

Stochastics measures the position of the closing price compared to the daily trading range. Prices tend to close near the higher end of the range in an uptrend and near the lower end in a decline...when a trend is about to change from up to down, the daily highs get higher but the closing price ends up near the lower end of the range.
Stochastics by itself is most effective when the %D & %K cross but the Candlestick signal is most viable when in the overbought/oversold areas. The cross of the lines shows a change is coming but the Candlestick signal shows when the turn has occurred. Try to buy when the Stochastics is just coming out of oversold and has just broke above 20…as long as the candlesticks say so. Watch for sell signals when it crosses 80. Set Stochastics to 12, 3, 3 for swing trading and 14, 5, 5 for longer term.
The fast one is %K while %D is the slow one. The slow stochastic is the more important one, however keep in mind that the stochastics are only an indicator of whether the trend is near the overbought or oversold area, the identification of a candlestick signal is the most important factor.
I cannot attach some other definitions taken from Equis which might make things clearer. Mateen sb, i will send this on tezimandee. could you please make it available for the other members.

    regards

    Some More Addition ....

    · Bullish Piercing Line: A bottom reversal signal. A red candlestick followed by a green candlestick that opens lower than the red candlestick's low, but closes more than halfway into the red body. The gap down on the 2nd day perpetuates the downtrend. However, the 2nd day's close is above the midpoint of the 1st day's body. This suggests to the bears that a bottom could be forming. The more penetration of the close on the 2nd day to the 1st day's body, the stronger the reversal signal.

    · Big Green Candle:
a candle whose close is much higher than the open.

    · Spinning Top: a candle with a small gap, negative or positive, between the open and close. Spinning tops usually require a confirmation from the next candle. If they are formed at the peak of a rally, they usually indicate a top and vice versa.

    · Doji Star: a Spinning Top which gaps above or below the previous candle. It is a reversal signal, which requires a confirmation from the next candle. If the Doji star gaps above the previous green candle, it is a bearish signal indicating a top and vice versa.

    · Engulfing Bearish Formation: A small green candle followed by and contained within a large red candle. This is usually an indication of a top.

    · Engulfing Bullish Formation: A small red body followed by and contained within a large green body.

    · Relative Strength Index (RSI): The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a popular oscillator used by traders. The name "Relative Strength Index" is slightly misleading as the RSI does not compare the relative strength of two securities, but rather the internal strength of a single security. A more appropriate name might be "Internal Strength Index."

The RSI is a fairly simple formula, but is difficult to explain without pages of examples. The basic formula is:
    RSI = 100 – {100 – [1+ (U/D)]}

    Where:
U = an average of upward price change.
D = an average of downward price change.

    · The Moving Average Convergence/Divergence indicator (MACD): is calculated by subtracting 26-period exponential moving average from 12-period exponential moving average. A 9-period dotted exponential moving average (the "signal line") is automatically displayed on top of the MACD indicator line.

    · The Stochastic Oscillator: is based on stochastic mathematics. It compares where a security's price closed relative to its trading range over the last x-time periods. The Stochastic Oscillator always ranges between 0% and 100%. A reading of 0% shows that the security's close was the lowest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods. A reading of 100% shows that the security's close was the highest price that the security has traded during the preceding x-time periods.

The Stochastic Oscillator indicates an oversold state below 20% and an overbought state above 80%.

    · The Commodity Channel Index (CCI): is calculated by first determining the difference between the mean price of a commodity and the average of the means over the time period chosen. This difference is then compared to the average difference over the time period (this factors-in the commodity's own inherent volatility). The result is then multiplied by a constant that is designed to adjust the CCI so that it fits into a "normal" trading range of +/-100.

    · Williams' %R: is similar to the Stochastic Oscillator and is plotted on an upside down scale with 0 at the top and 100 at the bottom.

    · Bollinger Bands: is a type of envelope developed by John Bollinger. Bollinger Bands are plotted at standard deviation levels above and below a moving average.
